Senior Program

The overwhelming majority of blind seniors have spent most of their lives as sighted people. Thus, upon becoming blind, they lack the blindness skills such as travel, communication, and other daily living skills necessary to minimize the disruption caused by blindness and allow them to live productive and independent lives.

The Society for the Blind has long recognized the importance of teaching core blindness skills and alternative techniques to blind seniors. For decades, the SFTB has been a leader in working with seniors who are blind or visually impaired in helping them gain the skills, positive attitudes and confidence needed to successfully deal with their blindness. Successful outcomes have resulted in hundreds of seniors regaining their independence, maintaining their integrity and, in many cases, preventing premature institutionalization.

Since 1954, the SFTB has been providing seniors throughout the Sacramento Region with multiple types of training and resources to assist them with their visual impairments and blindness. Including:

- Hands on instruction in such areas as orientation and mobility, independent living skills, Braille, and other communication skills using computers, magnifiers and other assistive technology.

- Blindness support groups and support groups aimed specifically at seniors.

- Seminars and training in the use of alternative forms of transportation.

- A career development program for seniors interested in remaining in or returning to the workforce.

- Several other on-going discussion groups and seminars dealing with specific medical conditions, self advocacy and positive attitudes toward blindness.
