Welcome to Society for the BlindPartnership for Independence since 1954PREVIOUS NEWS October 6, 2007: The Blind and Low Vision Olympics for the Youth of Northern California is being held at the practice tracks of California State University, Sacramento. This event, sponsored by Society for the Blind, in conjunction with the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation, Access Leisure Section, Sacramento State University, and area Lions Clubs, is the 24th of its kind. April 13, 14 and 15, 2007: Society for the Blind sponsored ten youth for the first annual Youth Leadership Summit. Eighteen visually impaired youth from Northern California attended this weekend, hosted by Rose Resnick Lighthouse for the Blind in Napa Valley. Activities for the weekend included problem solving tasks, resume building workshops, and leadership training.

to compete. Those who score at top
levels will be invited to attend the
National Braille Challenge in Los
Angeles later this year. This event
promotes Braille literacy in a fun and

September 16, 2006: The 2006 Blind and Low Vision Olympics for the Youth of Northern California was a big success. Thank you to all the youth participants, friends and family members who made it out for this special day. We truly appreciate the efforts of so many individuals, including over 100 fantastic volunteers, to make this day such an achievement. A big thank you goes to our sponsors for making this event possible! July 29, 2006: Our annual Summer Youth Retreat ended in fine style after over 30 youth, junior counselors and counselors completed two weeks at a rustic campsite in beautiful Plumas County. While there, the campers learned to walk independently with a white cane, cook and serve themselves meals, and use laptop computers and other adaptive technology. The campers also had a chance to have plenty of fun hiking, swimming, boating, rock climbing, and playing games. August 7, 2006: The next Senior IMPACT Project Retreat kicks off the second week of August. This retreat is held 8 to 10 times a year. Seniors who are blind or losing their vision are invited to join us for one of these retreats to learn skills to keep them safe and independent. We are holding it once again this year at Camp Cromberg in Quincy, California. The 2006 camp will run from July 17 through July 29. Click here to learn more. May 13, 2006: Technology Day for Youth! Held at Society for the Blind from 9AM to 3PM, the technology day provides an opportunity for youth and their families to learn more about the options available to them. June 12 through July 14, 2006: The Society for the Blind, in conjunction with the California State Department of Rehabilitation, will be sponsoring the 1st annual Business Enterprise Program (BEP) Youth Employment Program. The dates for Sacramento students will be June 12th through July 14th. We will have an orientation for both students and vendors on June 10th to provide more information. Students in the Sacramento area who are between 16 and 22 years of age are eligible. The student will be paid for their work experience and will work 4 days per week and then spend 1 half day at the Society for a group meeting and tips and tricks in working the job market. The Career Development Program's latest feature is designed to provide clients with the competitive edge necessary to successfully obtain employment and perform their jobs at a superior level. Email ddusseau@societyfortheblind.org for more information. February 25, 2006: Society for the Blind will be hosting a Northern California Braille Challenge Preliminary Competition. All youth in 1st through 12th grade are encourage to participate and demonstrate their Braille skills. Grand Prize winners will be invited to compete in the National Braille Challenge Competition in Los Angeles! Application packets are available online. Click here for more information. October 24, 2005: Society for the Blind hosted the first annual Halloween Party for the blind and visually impaired youth of the greater Sacramento community. Almost two dozen young people had a great time bobbing for apples, competing in a costume competition and exploring our spooky haunted house. Click here for some pictures of this fun day! October 8, 2005: We were honored this year to be the lead organization for the 2005 Blind and Low Vision Olympics for the Youth of Northern California. This event strives to promote healthy competition and challenge young people to reach their athletic potential. Participants and organizers also work to establish a foundation for youth and their parents to encourage mentorship, friendship and networking by fostering an atmosphere of high expectations and encouragement through our hosted athletic events and adaptive sports techniques. This year, over 60 young people spent the day at California State University, Sacramento, competing in various track and field events, visiting informational booths and learning from demonstration areas. Society for the Blind would like to thank all the participants, their families, and the volunteers and donors who made this event possible. Click here for some pictures from this outstanding event! October 3, 2005: Society for the Blind launched a new 30-day career evaluation program. We are working with the Department of Rehabilitation to identify local employers, such as the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), to identify jobs that can be made accessible for individuals who are blind or have low vision. During the month of October, three individuals received intensive training at Society for the Blind to help them compete for these positions. September 24, 2005: Our 2nd Annual Autumn Regatta was a great success. Attendees enjoyed yacht rides generously donated by members of the Sacramento Yacht Club, as well as silent and live auctions, Polynesian dancers and a Luau-style feast. After dinner, Society for the Blind clients from the Youth, Career Development and Senior Programs spoke about the impact their training has had on their lives. The event raised over $30,000 for the Society for the Blind -- a full third of which will go directly to the Summer Youth Retreat. Happy Halloween! October 8, 2005:

July 13, 2007 - July 22, 2007: Camp Cromborg near Quincy, California will once again host our Summer Retreat for Visually Impaired Youth The annual retreat is available for young people who are blind and visually impaired and are between 11 and 18-years-old. For 10 days, young people will have the opportunity to go camping, swimming, hiking and boating while learning Braille, adaptive technology, and the blindness skills that will help them succeed in school and the future. |
