A New Decade for Our Braille Program

In the month of Louis Braille’s birthday and the start of a new year and decade, we wanted to share some exciting updates about our Braille program.

Certification in Unified English Braille code

Jill Guilbeau, our Braille instructor, is now certified in the new Unified English Braille code – the result of an arduous exam and years of experience as an instructor. We are lucky to have such an expert Braille instructor on our staff!

New Braille Embosser Working Hard

Thanks to a generous donor, in 2019 we purchased a Braille embosser so we could produce Braille materials in-house for our use and for community groups. We were able to create our fall Technology and Resource Fair fliers in Braille, and provide Paratransit with 40 Braille copies of its upcoming route changes. We hope to provide even more materials to groups in 2020. If you want to learn more about placing an order for Braille materials, please call Jill at (916) 452-8271.

Customized Teaching

With our new Braille embosser, we are now able to create customized reading materials for our students, based on their specific needs, and write our own Braille lessons.Society Braille student

Family Braille Nights

We are continuing our series of Family Braille Nights where kids and their parents learn Grade 1 Braille and play a variety of fun games. Dates for 2020 Family Braille Nights will be coming soon!
