Bridging the Funding Shortfall for Seniors with Vision Loss
Independence is not something for which anyone should have to wait. For older adults experiencing vision loss, learning to use non-visual techniques and assistive technology transforms how they interact with the world. However, recent budget cuts directly threaten our Senior IMPACT Project, with the state slashing funding by 60%.
The reduced funding from the state budget directly impacts critical services for our seniors, including orientation and mobility training, assistive technology instruction and daily living skills education. Because of these financial rollbacks, older adults in our community will face significantly longer wait times to access specialized, life-changing care.
The stakes of waiting are great. When a senior experiences significant vision loss, everyday tasks can become sudden, overwhelming barriers. The specialized training provided by Society for the Blind is a direct remedy for these challenges:
- Orientation and mobility training gives seniors the physical skills and confidence to navigate neighborhoods safely, reducing dangerous fall risks.
- Assistive technology training teaches individuals how to use software, screen readers and adaptive devices to remain connected to loved ones and medical providers.
- Daily living skills instruction ensures older adults can manage medications, cook safely and maintain an independent household.
Delaying these services does more than slow down learning – it accelerates isolation. Prolonged wait times force vulnerable individuals to put their lives on hold. Many older adults do not have a family member living nearby, and access to public transportation and daily living assistance can be difficult to find.
While state budget cuts present a distinct challenge, our commitment to supporting seniors in the Sacramento region and beyond remains unyielding. We refuse to let a fiscal setback dictate the quality of life for older adults with vision loss.
Rather than scaling back our mission, we are calling upon our powerful network of community members and dedicated donors to join us in addressing this gap to ensure our Senior IMPACT Project is sustained for years to come.
Our Vision Forward Initiative, launched in honor of our 70th Anniversary, is intended to expand our capacity and help us navigate unforeseen challenges. We are accelerating our efforts to secure $500,000 of our goal by the end of this year. Achieving this financial goal will allow us to:
- Maintain our current roster of specialized instructors to prevent service interruptions.
- Absorb the deficit left by state funding rollbacks.
- Keep wait times at an absolute minimum so seniors receive care exactly when they need it.
While we remain hopeful that our elected representatives may get our funding added back into the budget, we want to be fully prepared to carry on our services for older adults without delay.
