Honoring the Women Behind the Mission: Women’s History Month at Society for the Blind

It is a privilege to dedicate this blog to the 29 incredible women on staff at Society for the Blind. Their contributions are foundational to our success and to the life-changing impact we deliver to those we serve. Notably, 11 of these women are blind or have low vision and are serving as instructors, fundraisers and managers—demonstrating the vast potential of individuals with vision loss.

I am honored to work alongside this team whose expertise moves our mission forward. From creating new curricula to recruiting and training volunteers and expanding programs, I express my deepest appreciation to the women of Society for the Blind:

Braille Production & Training Program: Jill, Liz

Core Program: Diane, Paige, Heather, Samantha, Teri, Jennifer

Finance & HR: Cherry, Terry, Carla, Debbie

Low Vision Clinic: Rachel, Dr. Meyer, Dr. Edwards, Toni, Chelsea, Rhonda

Resource Development: Lina, Ceridyn, Ellen

Senior IMPACT Program: Priscilla, Kathleen, Deb P., Debra C., Lovohn, Rachel, Roberta, Dixie

I also want to acknowledge The Delta Gammas, (DGs), who have supported Society for the Blind for 72 years. Established in 1873 in Oxford, Mississippi, today the DGs are one of the largest international women’s organizations. Their primary philanthropy work is “Service for Sight.” We are proud to have two Delta Gammas on our board: Ann Marie Bronte and Board President Marlene Mourtzikos. DG alumna and students at Sacramento State and UC Davis volunteer for numerous events and projects at Society each year, and we are deeply greatly for their support.

As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of the women at Society for the Blind, individuals living with low vision and blindness can discover, develop and achieve their full potential.
