May 2 is Big Day of Giving! Help us reach our goal of $15,000 to expand our music program.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Andersen

From the feel of guitar strings to the sound of drums, music speaks to people who have lost their sight. Your gift to Society for the Blind on Big Day of Giving will provide instruments and equipment for our brand new music room.

Society for the Blind’s Music Support Group was created by one of our assistive technology instructors, Randy Owen, when he discovered that some of his students could play musical instruments.

“It just seemed like a way to connect,” Randy said. “Members of the group have said it’s inspiring and uplifting, and I’ve noticed they have increased confidence. I think playing music is something many people love to do, and it’s empowering to express yourself.”

The group has begun to record songs and share recordings with each other. When Society for the Blind’s Vision 2020 building expansion is complete later this year, it will include a dedicated room for a music program where Randy hopes to have students explore career skills in recording, production and teaching. He also hopes the group will start performing and create an album.

Juan Avila said he comes to the Music Support Group because he loves to play music and it relieves his stress.

“I like that I can play music with other people, pick up on what they play and create a new song together,” Juan said.
