Society is Going Back to School!

Summer has gone by quickly and already kids are headed back to school. Society for the Blind’s CareersPLUS program is ready for the new academic year. Our After-School Academy, weekend youth workshops and “Family Fun” events will get underway on August 30th.

Our After-School Academy is offered Mondays through Thursdays from 3:00pm-5:00pm for children in elementary school through high school. Each child receives personalized tutoring and assistance in academics with a focus on literacy and math skills. We also introduce and teach children how to use assistive technologies. Last year we launched a STEM Workshop to introduce our youth to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Thanks to a generous grant from the ECMC GO! Program, we will be able to offer more STEM workshops during this school year.

We know that children with vision loss can achieve great academic and career success with the right tools and encouragement. Society for the Blind offers parent support groups to help create the circle of support that is so essential to a child’s growth and development. We host a Toddler-Parent group on Fridays from 10:00am-noon. Weekend parent meet-ups offer peer support groups for parents of children with vision loss.

For all children returning to school, it is a good idea to get an eye exam. Even small changes can make it difficult for your child to read what the teacher has written on the board or to see small print in textbooks.
