Society’s 70th Anniversary: Celebrating the Past and Building the Future

Final plans are underway for our 70th Anniversary celebration on Thursday, October 24.  Reaching this milestone is an achievement that reflects the inspiration, hard work and perseverance of hundreds of people over the past seven decades. Through the initiative of people who were blind who wanted to bring more awareness of and services to those living with vision loss and blindness, Society for the Blind was born.

From its official inception in December 1954, Society for the Blind has been supported by volunteers from the Delta Gamma Fraternity and local Lions Clubs. They have served on our board of directors, organized fundraising events, and provided thousands of hours of volunteer service to our programs and community events.

Our staff, nearly half of whom are blind or have low vision, are an exceptional group of people. Through their expertise and dedication, they have changed the lives of people whose lives were upended by vision loss.

Thousands of people living with low vision and blindness have received services at Society for the Blind, in their homes and at community centers and residential facilities. In the past four years, our capacity to provide remote services has expanded our reach to the northernmost areas of California and the state of Nevada.

When we gather in October to celebrate our past 70 years, we also will launch our Vision Forward project. Over the next five years, we want to expand our capacity to serve more people. Through renovations of our building, growing our technology and training programs, and broadening our clinic outreach and patient referral system, we will ensure that Society continues to offer state-of-the-art instruction and low vision eye care for our 27-county service area.

I hope you will join us on October 24 as we celebrate our past and step into the future with Vision Forward, so that anyone living with low vision or blindness can discover, develop and achieve their full potential.
