Vision Forward: Fulfilling Hopes and Dreams Together

Happy Holidays! It has been a celebratory year at Society for the Blind as we marked our 70th year of service to the Sacramento region. As we close out the year, our focus is on the future, ensuring that our training center and Low Vision Clinic have the technology and staff to meet demand.

We were thrilled to be selected as one of the featured nonprofits in the Sacramento Bee’s 2024 Book of Dreams. Our goal is to raise funds to renovate our core program teaching kitchens. After 15 years of near-daily use, the ovens, washer, dryer and small appliances need to be replaced.

These kitchens in our teaching center are a key tool for our Independent Living Skills class. In this class, our clients learn how to run their day-to-day lives non-visually. They learn how to cook, clean, do laundry, go shopping and organize their household. We teach them how to use apps on their smart phones, as well as “old school” ways to label food products and appliances.

Upgrading our teaching center is a core part of our Vision Forward Initiative, and I hope you will consider supporting us in achieving our goal to raise $1 million by 2027. In addition to the upgrade to the teaching kitchens, we want to repurpose a portion of our second floor to create a resource and learning center. This new space will give our clients access to new assistive technologies, as well as space to practice new skills and receive additional tutoring. The resource and learning center will advance our clients’ employment and academic goals.

The Vision Forward Initiative will ensure that Society for the Blind remains a leader in blindness skills training and low vision eye care. We want our clients to thrive, pursue their professional aspirations and engage fully in our community. Thank you for all you have done and for continuing to partner with us to ensure that individuals living with low vision and blindness can discover, develop and achieve their full potential.

Here’s to a new year filled with possibilities!
